Film director and writer Michael A. Pinckney is the “next” director on the rise! In all of Spike Lee’s career, we’ve never heard of him passing the baton to another director -but Mr. Pinckney seems to be the first! Michael has been working with the legendary Lee for the last 10 years and now he’s stepping out on his own to direct feature films.
Pinckney just finished working on the Brett Ratner film ‘Tower Heist’ as 2nd assistant director.
While currently assisting Spike Lee film the pilot for the new HBO series “Da Brick,” Pinckney is currently shopping and previewing his debut horror film, “You’re Nobody ‘Til Somebody Kills You” across the country. The film reunites ‘Wire’ alums Michael K. Williams and Julito McCullum and was recently chosen to close out ‘Willifest’ in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in September and was a huge success.
YNTSK also made it’s premiere and debut at Comic & Horror Con in Long Beach, CA last month.
Having Spike Lee executive produce your film is a huge deal since he never does anything of the sort. This definitely places Michael Pinckney on our radar and I’m sure everyone will be talking about him in the upcoming year. With various other projects in the works, Pinckney is positioning himself as the next ‘go-to’ film director.
According to IMDB “You’re Nobody…” is an action packed and gritty story of two New York City homicide detectives that are forced into the high-stakes world of the hip hop industry. A complex web of murder, sex, money and music unfolds as the homicide detectives track a serial killer with an appetite for some of hip hop’s biggest stars.

Catch this clip from the movie “You’re Nobody ‘Til Somebody Kills You” where director Michael A. Pinckney shot Doug E. Fresh in the studio, and the rhyme was originally not recorded over music. What’s so cool about this scene is the original beat that was produced afterwards to the timings of Doug E. Fresh’s natural flow. The music was written and produced by Kotchy.
